Our Subcommittees

VGSQ accomplishes positive things because of the contributions of its members.  Of our 85 members, roughly 2/3rds serve on one of the subcommittees below, demonstrating our ongoing ethic of service.

Color Guard

VGSQ's Color Guard presents at formal and celebratory occasions, and provides Honor Guard services at remembrances and on Memorial Day. These presentations revive Veterans' pride in their military service, and remind all that their service and patriotism is not erased by time or their current situation.

Food Pantry

VGSQ created and manages a food pantry for residents who are food insecure, providing an average of 1,800 distributions a month.

Men's Chorus

VGSQ celebrates and honors military service through choral performance at each of our events, and helps SQ residents recognize their commonality through their love for music. The group has performed patriotic standards, as well as new compositions created specifically for the Veterans Group of San Quentin.

Joint Gaming Venture

VGSQ's Joint Gaming Venture promotes camaraderie and levels the playing field, bringing VGSQ members and guests together in order to build new friendships and connections using different kinds of multi-player games.

Veterans' Event Planning

The Veterans' Event Planning Committee builds events that create a heightened morale and sense of pride within the San Quentin community. VGSQ events build bridges that connect VGSQ with San Quentin residents, staff and administration, as well as community groups who support Veterans.

Toyland

Each year, VGSQ hosts the holiday Toyland event, providing toys and transforming a section of the Visiting Rooms into a brightened space for children to visit their incarcerated loved one, for the incarcerated individual to give a gift to their child, and for the family to share the holiday spirit together.

Newsletter

The VGSQ Quarterly Newsletter provides connection between VGSQ's members, the San Quentin community, and VGSQ friends on the outside by sharing stories, our event calendar, and ways to support Veterans.

Finance

The Finance Committee carefully plans and reviews VGSQ's annual budget as an important part of maintaining the trust of those who choose to give to VGSQ.

Executive Committee

VGSQ's Executive Committee acts as a liaison between the subcommittees, administration, and outside supporters, ensuring that activities serve the VGSQ mission, cultivate opportunities for building camaraderie, and are performed with integrity.
